Welcome to East Hants Historical Society
Lower Selma, East Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada
The East Hants Historical Society, established in 1967, is an all volunteer non-profit organization devoted to the promotion and preservation of history within East Hants.
The Society offers regular programs of local historical interest and operates a seasonal museum in Lower Selma.
The museum, located in the former Lr. Selma United Church (1865), is a designated Municipal Heritage Property and a repository for documents, photos, artifacts and other ephemera pertaining to East Hants. It also houses a small research library and is a valuable resource for genealogical research.
It is the objective of the East Hants Historical Society to:
- gather, compile and preserve written and printed documents of historic value and interest,
- maintain and operate a museum and library to house artifacts and documents thus collected,
- promote the marking of historic sites within the county by suitable plaques, cairns or otherwise,
- cooperate with civic officials in celebrations of a historic nature.
Although we are a small museum, we have quite an extensive local history research library containing (but not limited to):
Local Family Histories/Genealogies
Cemetery records and headstone inscriptions for all known cemeteries in East Hants
Local Community Histories
Local Area Photograph Collections
*Please note - We will continue to provide in-house access to genealogical material, but can no longer
do genealogical work on behalf of historical researchers.
If you have papers, photographs or any other documents or artifacts which you think might possibly be of historical interest please let us know - better yet, bring them in - perhaps we have additional information to share.
Please take the time to explore the site using the links on the left.
Closed for the season.
